PVC or wood? This is a different comparison from PVC versus aluminium, because here it’s not just about numbers: wood carries an emotional, aesthetic and sometimes regulatory factor that weighs as much as performance. Let’s try to put them side by side honestly, saying where each one genuinely wins. Let’s give away the conclusion up front: there’s no absolute winner, there’s the right choice for your context.
A note on method: all the figures we cite (Uw, lifespans, prices, percentages) are indicative and give an order of magnitude. Thermal insulation
In short: roughly equal, with different advantages.
Both PVC and wood are naturally insulating materials, unlike aluminium, which is a conductor. Solid wood has excellent thermal mass and a “warm” feel to the touch. PVC, thanks to the multiple air chambers in the profile, achieves very good insulation values with a contained thickness.
As an example, a good multi-chamber PVC window can sit around Uw 0.9-1.1 W/m²K depending on the glazing, and a good wooden window achieves similar values. The difference, for equivalent glazing units and build quality, is generally small and is almost never the deciding factor in the purchase.

Acoustic insulation
In short: roughly equal, the glazing decides.
On noise, the frame material matters less than people think. In both PVC and wood, sound reduction depends chiefly on the glazing package (laminated glass, asymmetric thicknesses, cavities) and on the seal of the gaskets. Both materials, well made, handle the problem well. If you live on a busy road, talk about the glazing build-up before you talk about the frame.
Durability and maintenance
In short: PVC wins, and here the margin is real.
This is where the two materials genuinely diverge. Wood is a living material: it absorbs moisture, it expands, and its finish (paint or stain) protects the fibre from the weather. That protection wears out. This is why a wooden window needs cyclical maintenance: as an indication, a repaint or a refresh every few years, more often on sides more exposed to sun and rain. It’s a real, recurring cost and commitment for the entire life of the window.
PVC, on the other hand, doesn’t need maintenance of the material itself: it doesn’t flake, doesn’t need repainting, isn’t affected by moisture. On overall lifespan, both can last decades, but with different dynamics: PVC keeps its properties with minimal effort; wood lasts just as long if maintenance is carried out. Left neglected, wood degrades visibly.
Aesthetics and warmth

Let’s say it plainly: for aesthetics and the perception of warmth, wood has something PVC doesn’t fully replicate. Real grain, tactile quality, the way it ages, the connection to traditional architecture: it’s a genuine value, subjective but legitimate. Those who love wood love it for this, and it’s a good reason.
PVC has made huge strides with wood-effect foils (decorative finishes that imitate species and grain), which today are convincing and stable over time. They’re an excellent solution for anyone who wants the look of wood without the maintenance. But a foil finish, however well made, remains an imitation: up close, and to a discerning eye, real wood is a different thing. Honesty demands we admit that.
Sustainability and perception
In short: it depends on how you look at it.
Here the debate is more nuanced than the slogans suggest. Wood is perceived as the “natural” material par excellence, and it’s a weighty argument, especially if it comes from certified, responsibly managed supply chains. But it carries a footprint linked to recurring maintenance (paints, solvents, work over time).
PVC is a technical material and today it’s widely recyclable: end-of-life profiles can re-enter recovery chains, and this is an aspect the “plastic equals bad” narrative tends to ignore. Its lifespan without maintenance reduces consumption over the life cycle. It’s not a one-sided comparison: both have solid sustainability arguments, and anyone telling you one is “eco” and the other isn’t is oversimplifying.
Cost
In short: PVC generally offers a better value-for-money ratio in the mid-range; quality wood costs more.
Prices vary a great deal depending on system, dimensions, glazing and installation, so take these as orders of magnitude rather than price lists. Generally speaking, for equivalent performance and band, a good-quality wooden window tends to cost more than an equivalent PVC one, and the gap widens with prized wood species and bespoke finishes.
On top of this comes the cost over time: wood’s cyclical maintenance is a recurring expense that PVC doesn’t have. Behaviour over time
PVC is stable: it doesn’t warp with moisture and keeps the frame’s geometry, a useful condition for the hardware and seals to keep working well. It should be said that it’s sensitive to thermal expansion, which is managed at the design stage with the internal steel reinforcements of quality profiles.
Wood, being hygroscopic, moves with the seasons: small movements are physiological and well tolerated by a well-built window, but if maintenance is neglected, prolonged exposure can lead to cracking of the finish and, in the worst cases, to water ingress. Again: the care taken over time makes the difference.

When PVC is NOT the right choice
In fairness, there are situations where wood is the correct choice, and we’ll say so clearly.
Listed buildings and historic settings. On properties subject to heritage restrictions or in historic centres, the heritage authority can require wood (or specific materials and appearances) for architectural consistency. In these cases PVC may not be permitted. Rules vary by area and by individual property: before deciding, check with the relevant heritage authority (Soprintendenza) and with a professional (architect or surveyor) what applies to your case. Don’t assume what’s allowed: this is an area where a mistake is costly.
Aesthetic taste and perceived value. If the warmth and authenticity of real wood are non-negotiable for you, that’s an entirely legitimate reason. No foil finish replaces real wood for those who love it, and in high-value homes wood contributes to the property’s perceived value.
Consistency with the existing building. In a home with all-solid-wood windows of quality, replacing some with PVC can create an aesthetic mismatch. Sometimes consistency matters more than the individual saving.
For the opposite case, where PVC is the more sensible choice, its strengths apply: minimal maintenance, a good value-for-money ratio in the mid-range and good insulation. These are the reasons why, outside restricted contexts, it’s now one of the most widespread choices.
A note on PVC quality
When talking about PVC, it’s right to make distinctions. Not all plastic windows are the same: what matters is the profile system, the wall thickness, the steel reinforcements and the quality of the hardware. Our PVC windows and doors use German-made Salamander profiles, CE-marked under the European regulatory framework, and are produced and managed in Italy. CE marking for windows and doors refers to the product standard EN 14351-1, within the framework of the Construction Products Regulation CPR 305/2011; installation quality, on the other hand, is governed by UNI 11673. Is PVC less insulating than wood? No. For equivalent glazing and quality, PVC and wood offer very similar thermal insulation. The difference, where it exists, is small and rarely decisive: the glazing and the installation matter far more.
