Salamander for window fitters: working a system, not a profile

Why it pays for a window fitter or reseller to adopt the Salamander profile system as their supply base: a coherent range, certification, spares, marginability.

I’m talking peer to peer with those who actually do this job: window fitters, resellers, installers, small businesses who every week have to give a customer an answer, buy well and install without having to go back on site to fix something. The question really worth asking isn’t “which is the best Salamander profile”. It’s another one: does it pay to adopt a coherent profile system as your supply base, instead of picking the best individual piece from different suppliers each time?

This post answers that question from a business perspective, not a single-product one. If you’re after the spec-by-spec comparison between the three residential profiles — chambers, thicknesses, Uf values — that’s a different discussion, more geared to the end customer, and I’ve written it in the comparison between the Salamander GreenEvolution 76 and BlueEvolution 72/82 profiles. Here, instead, I’m talking about the supply chain: what actually changes, in practice, for those who resell and install when working with a coherent German system.


What I mean by “system”, and why it isn’t a marketing word

Salamander Industrie-Produkte is a German manufacturer of PVC profile systems, based in Türkheim, Bavaria. The key word is systems: they don’t just sell the extruded profile, they sell a range designed to work together. Compatible geometries, accessories sized to the same rebates, hardware that fits standardised grooves, matching seals, glazing beads from the same family.

For anyone assembling or reselling, the practical difference is enormous. When you work a system:

  • the machining dimensions (offcuts, cuts, milling) are the same across the whole range;
  • the hardware is interchangeable between the profiles in the family, so you don’t have to stock three different logics;
  • you can still find spares years later, because the system has commercial continuity;
  • the technical documentation (data sheets, values, declarations) is consistent and updated from a single source.

When, instead, you take “the cheapest profile this month” from one supplier and the following week a different one from another supplier, every job becomes a case of its own. The seal changes, the glazing bead changes, the hardware changes, and so does whoever answers when there’s a problem. It looks like a saving on the purchase; it’s often a hidden cost on the job.


A coherent system versus disconnected profiles: what really changes

Here’s a table of the items that, as someone in the trade, I see having the biggest impact. These aren’t savings figures — they’re the points where a coherent system makes you work better or worse.

The point of the table isn’t that one option is “always right”. It’s that the value of a system isn’t measured on the cost of a single metre of profile, but on how much it simplifies your life across dozens of jobs a year.


A coherent range from entry to passive house: why it matters for those who sell

A serious system covers several bands with the same construction logic. In residential, Salamander means, broadly speaking, a profile for standard replacement, one for serious energy retrofits, and one for passive houses and nZEBs with Passive House Institute certification. I won’t go into the spec-by-spec detail here — you’ll find that in the dedicated comparison.

What matters to you as a seller is this: with a single range you can answer a customer from a city flat and a customer building a passive house without changing supplier, hardware or installation procedures. The entry quote and the “premium” quote come out of the same supply chain. A customer who starts from the economical option and later moves up a band doesn’t force you to start again from scratch. And when you explain to the customer why one profile costs more than another, you’re talking about a coherent scale, not three disconnected worlds — it’s a sale that’s easier to tell and to defend.

To work out how to fit this into your commercial proposition, it’s worth first thinking through the underlying choice: producing in-house or buying for resale, because the profile system is exactly the base this decision rests on.


Certification and documentation: the boring side that saves you

Precision is needed here, because this is ground where imprecision is too common. Finished windows and doors placed on the market in Italy fall under the harmonised standard EN 14351-1 (external windows and doors), which is the reference for CE marking of the unit. CE marking involves the Declaration of Performance (DoP) under the Construction Products Regulation CPR (EU) 305/2011: it’s the manufacturer of the finished window or door who draws up the DoP and applies the CE mark to the product, based on the declared performance.

Watch out for a point that causes confusion: CE marking and the DoP concern the finished window or door, not the profile as a semi-finished component. The profile system and its components, the coherence of the range and the manufacturer’s technical documentation are what put you in a position to correctly declare your product’s performance — but formal responsibility for the DoP stays with whoever places the finished unit on the market. Knowing who does what in the chain is half the job.

There’s also the RAL mark (RAL Gütezeichen), a voluntary German quality mark widespread on PVC profiles, which attests to quality requirements on the profiles and the process. It isn’t a statutory mark like CE: it’s a recognised quality signal, useful to explain to the customer, but not to be confused with the finished window or door’s mandatory compliance.

Working with a system with orderly documentation means having data sheets and consistent declarations on hand when a client, a designer or a technical office asks for them. It’s the kind of thing you don’t notice until you need it, and when you need it, it’s the difference between a job that proceeds and one that gets bogged down. Returns, standardisation and training: where the real margin is won or lost

A window fitter’s margin isn’t made on the purchase price alone. It’s made — or lost — on three less visible fronts:

Returns and call-backs to site. Every return is a double cost: the piece and the time. A coherent system, with consistent tolerances and hardware, reduces the variance that causes fitting errors and disputes. I won’t promise percentages — it depends on your workflow and how organised your warehouse is — but the direction is clear: fewer different worlds to manage, fewer chances to get it wrong.

Size standardisation. When the whole range follows the same cutting and machining logic, you can standardise cutting lists, work sheets and procedures. This is what lets you delegate without every job depending on the most experienced person in the workshop.

Team training. Training a fitter or a production operative on one system pays off across the whole range. If instead you switch profile every season, the learning curve starts over each time, and the most frequent mistakes are exactly the ones made on the first pieces of a new profile.

Continuity of supply: the factor that matters over the long run

A customer calls you five years later because a handle has broken or they need a replacement sash. With a system in continuous production, that spare part still exists. With an assembly of profiles picked up here and there, that specific component may no longer be available, and you’re left explaining to the customer why.

Continuity isn’t just about spares: it’s also predictability of supply. Knowing which range you can rely on for the coming years lets you build offers, hold sensible stock and make commitments to clients without fear the product will vanish from the catalogue. For a reseller, this predictability is part of the value the customer pays for, even if they don’t see it.

When it’s NOT worth it

I’d be dishonest if I said adopting a single system is always the right choice. There are cases where it isn’t, or matters less:

  • Minimum volumes. If you install very few units a year and already buy them finished for resale, the benefits of system standardisation touch you only lightly: you’re buying a product, not working a range. The “system” argument carries weight when you produce or assemble with a certain continuity.
  • A niche where another system is stronger. If you work a specific niche — a particular façade segment, unusual sliding units, applications where another manufacturer has the reference solution for that type of job — forcing a generalist system makes no sense. The right tool for that job is better.
  • Already heavily set up on another system. If you have machinery, jigs, training and stock built up over years around another profile family, the switching cost may not be worth the benefit. The coherence you already have is itself a value.
  • Installation-only work. If you only install, on products that arrive finished and chosen by the client, the profile system is someone else’s decision further up the chain.

The honest point here: the system pays off for those who produce, assemble or resell with continuity and want to build a repeatable offer. It’s not a badge to wear; it’s a working tool, and it should be chosen when your business model pays it back.


FAQ

Do I need to change my entire stock to adopt a system? No, and I wouldn’t advise doing it all at once. A transition makes more sense: start with one band (for example the standard replacement profile) on new jobs and widen it gradually. Coherence is built over time, not in a weekend.

Does the Salamander system tie me to a single supplier? The system belongs to the German manufacturer; who processes or supplies it for you is a separate choice. You can rely on a partner who produces on that system without losing alternatives as a result. What matters is that your supplier has continuity and orderly documentation, more than how many names you have in your contacts.

Who’s responsible for CE marking and the DoP, me or the profile manufacturer? CE marking and the Declaration of Performance concern the finished window or door and, under CPR 305/2011, sit with whoever places the unit on the market. The profile system manufacturer provides the data and technical documentation you need to declare correctly, but the DoP is drawn up by whoever places the finished product on the market. Clarifying this step with your supplier is essential.

Do I need the RAL mark to sell in Italy? It isn’t a legal requirement like CE: it’s a voluntary quality mark. It is, however, a concrete selling point with attentive customers, and a signal that the profile follows recognised quality requirements. Present it as a quality feature, not as a legal obligation.

Does working a coherent system really improve margin? It shifts the margin to where it counts: fewer returns, less rework, more repeatable offers, training that pays off over time. I can’t give you an honest percentage because it depends on your flow and volumes. The logic, though, is sound: reduce variance and standardise, and across dozens of jobs it shows.

Can I use the same system for both entry-level and passive house? Yes, and that’s exactly the advantage. A coherent range covers different bands with the same machining, hardware and installation logic. You sell to the flat-owning customer and to the nZEB customer without changing supply chain. In summary

For a window fitter or a reseller, the value of Salamander isn’t in the single most insulating profile: it’s in adopting a coherent system as your supply base. A range covering entry level and passive house with the same logic, compatible hardware and spares, orderly technical documentation to manage the CE marking and DoP of the finished unit, continuity of supply, standardisation that reduces returns and makes margin more defensible. It isn’t the right choice for everyone — not for those doing minimal volumes or working a niche where another system is stronger — but for those producing and reselling with continuity, it’s a solid base to build a repeatable offer on.
