The best PVC window profiles: how to recognise them

How to recognise a good PVC window profile regardless of brand: chambers, thickness, steel reinforcement, formulation, RAL certification. Checklist.

“What’s the best PVC profile for windows?” is a question almost every customer asks me, and the honest answer is that there is no universally “best” brand. There are objective criteria that separate a serious profile from a poor one, and those criteria hold true regardless of the name printed on the technical datasheet. Once you learn to read them, you stop relying on marketing and start comparing quotes on real grounds.

This article does not compare specific brands. It is a general guide to recognising quality in any PVC profile: what to look for, what to ask your window installer, and what to be wary of. A methodological premise, worth repeating because it matters: all the numerical values you will find here (thicknesses in mm, number of chambers, Uf values) are indicative and provided as examples, useful orders of magnitude to guide you. The profile is only half the window (but it’s the half that’s hidden)

A PVC window is a composite product: profile, double-glazed unit, hardware, gaskets, internal reinforcement. The profile is the skeleton, the extruded plastic part that forms the frame and sash. It is also the hardest part to assess by eye, because much of what matters — the steel reinforcement, the air chambers, the material formulation — is invisible once the window is installed.

This is why uncertified low-cost profiles do so much damage: they look identical to good ones when new and white. The difference shows after five, ten, fifteen years — when one yellows, warps or the sashes no longer close properly, while the other is still performing. Assessing the profile before purchase means protecting yourself from an expense you only pay once.

The objective criteria of a good profile

Let’s line up the parameters that really matter, one by one.

1. Number of chambers

Chambers are the hollow sections separated by internal walls along the depth of the profile. More chambers mean more pockets of still air, and still air insulates. As a guideline, modern residential profiles range indicatively from 5 to 7 chambers; below 5 chambers, it is usually a low-cost or non-residential profile.

Be careful, though: the number of chambers alone is not a quality score. What matters is how they are arranged and how thick the material separating them is. A poorly designed 6-chamber profile can insulate worse than a well-made 5-chamber one. It is an indicator, not a verdict.

2. Profile thickness (installation depth)

This is the measurement, in millimetres, of how “deep” the frame is. As a guideline, residential profiles today sit in a range from around 70 mm up to over 80 mm for high-performance systems. Greater thickness allows for wider chambers, more insulation and deeper glazing rebates (hence thicker triple glazing).

It is not automatic that “thicker always means better”: a 70 mm profile with intelligent geometry can perform as well as a 76 mm profile with lazy geometry. But thickness remains a figure anyone should be able to state for you. If it is missing from a quote, ask for it.

3. Hot-dip galvanised steel reinforcement

This is the criterion that separates serious profiles from those that warp. PVC alone cannot support the dimensions of a modern window: it flexes, deforms in the heat, and after a few years the sashes no longer close properly. This is why the central chambers house hot-dip galvanised steel reinforcement.

Things to ask about and check:

  • Presence of reinforcement: it must be there, at least in the sashes and frames beyond a certain size. Profiles with no reinforcement, or with reinforcement only “on a sample basis”, are a risk.
  • Steel gauge thickness: as a guideline, residential profiles typically have gauges indicatively from 1.5 to 2.5 mm depending on the size of the window. The bigger the window, the more it matters.
  • Closed versus open section: closed-section (box-type) reinforcements are stiffer than open U-sections. On large windows this makes a real difference.

Be wary of anyone who cannot tell you whether the window is reinforced. For an opening beyond, indicatively, 1500 mm on a side, upgraded reinforcement is not optional.

4. PVC formulation: calcium-zinc stabilisation

PVC must be chemically stabilised, otherwise it degrades under light and heat. Lead was used for decades, and is now banned in the European Union. Serious profiles use calcium-zinc stabilisation (sometimes marketed as “green”), which is lead-free. It is safer environmentally and typically ensures better colour stability over time.

What to ask: “is the PVC calcium-zinc stabilised, lead-free?”. A reputable manufacturer will answer without hesitation. On a non-EU profile of uncertain origin, this is exactly the question to ask, because it is the hardest to verify after the fact.

5. Colour stability and co-extrusion

White is the standard colour. For coloured or wood-effect finishes, quality depends on how the colour is applied. Co-extrusion (a layer of colour fused with the profile during extrusion) and quality technical foils withstand sunlight for years; cheap surface coatings fade and flake.

Worth asking: how the coloured finish is produced, and whether there is a warranty on the colour. Dark profiles (anthracite, brown) absorb more heat in the sun and warm the frame more: this is not a defect, but it is worth knowing, and serious systems include specific measures to manage it.

6. Rebate geometry and gaskets

Air and water tightness depend on the gaskets and on how the rebate (the point where sash and frame meet) is designed. Quality profiles have double or triple EPDM gaskets, a material that stays elastic for years. Cheap soft PVC gaskets harden sooner.

Gaskets do not last forever: they are indicatively replaced after 15-20 years as routine maintenance. But good rebate geometry reduces draughts from day one.

Certification: what’s mandatory and what’s voluntary

There is a lot of confusion here, so let’s set it straight. Certifications fall into two families, and understanding the difference helps you correctly read what you are being offered.

Two things worth fixing firmly in mind:

  • CE marking is a legal obligation for every window and door sold in the European Union. It is not a merit, it is the bare minimum. If it is missing, there is a serious problem. The CE marking reports the declared values under EN 14351-1 within the framework of Regulation CPR 305/2011.
  • The RAL mark is a voluntary quality certification, not a legal obligation. Not having it does not make a profile illegal; having it is a signal that the manufacturer submits to additional checks. It is a credible “extra”, not a requirement.

Keep the product marking separate from installation: installation quality follows other reference standards, such as UNI 11673 on fitting practice. These are different planes, both important.

Salamander as an example of a certified system

Use this when comparing quotes. Print it, take it to the site survey, ask the questions.

If whoever gives you the quote answers most of these questions confidently, that is a good sign. If they dodge, hedge or change the subject, that is the signal to be wary of.

What to be wary of in low-cost profiles

Not all cheap profiles are bad, but certain signals recur in products to avoid:

  • No technical datasheet available. If they cannot give you thickness, chamber count and declared values, something does not add up.
  • Price far below average. PVC, steel and EPDM cost money. A quote well below market is saving somewhere, and that somewhere is usually the profile or the reinforcement.
  • CE marking absent or vague. It is a legal obligation: its absence is a serious warning sign.
  • Profile origin left unstated. A reputable manufacturer states the profile’s system supplier. Anyone evasive on this point often has something to hide.
  • Promises too good to be true. A “German profile” at a discount price is almost always a contradiction.

When it’s NOT worth obsessing over the profile

The profile matters, but it is not the only thing, and in some cases spending more on it has diminishing returns:

  • If the rest of the house insulates poorly. Fitting the highest-performing profile on a 1970s building with no external insulation is unbalanced: heat escapes through the walls, not the frame. Better a good standard profile and invest where it is needed.
  • If the climate zone is mild. In a warm climate zone, the performance gap of a top-tier profile does not pay for itself. A good standard system with low-emissivity double glazing is already adequate. On this point, see thermal insulation and Uw values by climate zone.
  • If you neglect the installation. The best profile in the world, poorly fitted, will draught. Installation quality matters as much as profile quality, sometimes more.
  • If the window is small and lightly stressed. On a small fixed pane, the differences between good-quality profiles narrow. The real gain is seen on large glazed surfaces.
  • If you’re about to sell the house. The premium of a top-tier system pays for itself over many years of energy bills; if the house is about to change hands, a good standard profile is the rational choice.

The principle: the best profile is the right one for your building and your time horizon, not the one with the highest numbers on the datasheet.

FAQ

How many chambers should a good PVC profile have? As a guideline, for residential use we’re talking 5-7 chambers. But the number alone is not enough: geometry and the thickness of the internal walls matter too. A well-designed 5-chamber profile can perform as well as a mediocre 6-chamber one.

Is the RAL mark a legal requirement? No. The RAL mark is a voluntary quality certification. The only legally mandatory marking is CE, under EN 14351-1 within the framework of Regulation CPR 305/2011. RAL is a credible extra, not a legal requirement.

How do I know if a profile is steel-reinforced? Ask the window installer directly and get confirmation in writing. A reputable manufacturer states the presence, the gauge thickness (as a guideline, indicatively from 1.5 to 2.5 mm) and the type of reinforcement section. On large windows, upgraded reinforcement is essential.

Does a thicker profile always insulate better? Not automatically. Thickness, indicatively from 70 mm upwards, helps because it allows wider chambers, but internal geometry and the number of chambers matter just as much. A well-designed thin profile can match a thicker but lazily designed one.

What does “lead-free” PVC mean? It means the material is stabilised with calcium-zinc instead of lead compounds, which are banned in the European Union. This is the standard for serious profiles today: safer environmentally and typically more colour-stable over time.

Is a German profile worth it? German system manufacturers are a good quality benchmark, but “German” is not a magic guarantee: chambers, reinforcement, formulation and CE marking still need to be checked. What matters is that whoever is selling it can answer these questions, regardless of origin.

Chambers, thickness, steel reinforcement, lead-free formulation, CE marking: these five points separate a window that lasts from one that disappoints.
