The project
A 140 sqm penthouse in Oltrarno (Florence) subject to heritage protection constraints. Ten windows were replaced with Salamander GreenEvolution 76 PVC in a walnut-effect finish (panelled layout matching the original design), plus 2 LMT 91 aluminium lift-and-slide French doors opening onto the terrace. Coordination with the Heritage Authority (Soprintendenza) for finish approval.
The context
A 140 sqm penthouse in Oltrarno, on the left bank of the Arno in Florence, within a building subject to heritage protection. The brief required a full replacement of twelve openings while preserving the panelled layout and proportions the Soprintendenza expects on protected façades, alongside a genuine improvement in thermal and acoustic performance for a top-floor flat exposed on multiple sides and to traffic noise from the streets below.
The technical solution
Ten windows were supplied in Salamander GreenEvolution 76 PVC with a walnut-effect foil finish, replicating the original glazing bar layout panel by panel so the street-facing elevation reads as it always has. Two LMT 91 aluminium lift-and-slide French doors open onto the terrace, chosen for their slim thermally broken profile and load capacity on large glazed leaves. Finish, colour and glazing bar detailing were agreed with the Heritage Authority before manufacture began, and low-emissivity double glazing was specified throughout to raise thermal performance without altering the historic appearance.
The outcome
The finished installation meets the Soprintendenza's aesthetic requirements while delivering the airtightness and low-emissivity glazing performance of a modern thermal-break system, cutting draughts and street noise and lowering overall heating consumption for the top-floor flat. All units were manufactured to measure in our own factories and supplied ready for fitting by the client's installer, together with the technical documentation needed for the heritage sign-off.
