Mediterranean climate and building heritage of Bari

Bari falls within climate zone C, with an indicative 1,185 degree days: mild, short winters, with temperatures rarely dropping sharply, and very hot, sunny, prolonged summers. The climate is typically Mediterranean, marked by strong solar radiation and by winds that, along the Adriatic coast, carry a salt-laden sea aerosol. For windows this means the priority is not so much protection from the cold as summer solar control: curbing overheating in south- and west-facing rooms and protecting materials and hardware from the corrosive action of sea salt. Selective low-solar-factor glazing, shading and resistant finishes therefore become central technical choices, to be calibrated according to the orientation of each opening.

Bari's urban fabric is composite. Bari Vecchia, the medieval core facing the sea around the Basilica of San Nicola, retains narrow alleys, courtyards and small openings that call for work respecting the historic character. The Murat district, the 19th-century grid-planned city between the port and the station, features apartment blocks with regular, tall and orderly window openings, where façade uniformity matters. Around it lie the Libertà, Madonnella, Carrassi, Poggiofranco, Japigia and San Paolo districts, with residential blocks from the 1960s-80s and, in the ring, more recent new-build residences. Local restrictions in Bari Vecchia and Murat

Bari Vecchia and numerous protected buildings in the centre are subject to restrictions and requirements that may also affect window replacement: the geometry of openings, materials, colours and finishes compatible with the historic context. Where a property is listed, assessments fall to the Superintendency and municipal offices, and requirements must be checked case by case. Our role is technical: we make windows compatible with the required character and, for any authorisation or protection matter, we refer to the appointed professional (architect, surveyor or qualified technician), who handles the applications and dealings with the authorities.
