Climate characteristics and building heritage

Naples falls within climate zone C with around 1,034 degree days: mild, rainy winters, with minimum temperatures rarely dropping below 4-5 degrees, and long, hot, particularly humid summers, with sultry conditions across much of June, July and August. Summer solar radiation is very intense on south-, south-west- and west-facing elevations, especially in the hilly areas of Vomero, Arenella and Posillipo. The defining climatic factor, however, is proximity to the sea: salt sea spray significantly affects the whole coastal strip (Posillipo, Mergellina, Chiaia, Bagnoli, Coroglio, Fuorigrotta, Granatello) and calls for specific technical choices on materials, hardware and seals. The building stock is extraordinarily varied. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, retains 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century buildings with projecting piperno-stone balconies, decorative corbels and painted timber shutters. Chiaia, upper Vomero, Posillipo and Mergellina hold Art Nouveau villas, Umbertine apartment blocks and very high-end residences. Fuorigrotta, Bagnoli, Pianura, Soccavo, Ponticelli, Scampia and the outlying areas are dominated by residential blocks from the 1960s-80s, today ideal candidates for energy retrofits.

Most common replacement types in Naples

Four categories of work recur most frequently in our Naples projects. The first concerns houses and blocks along the coastal strip, where salt spray requires the use of Salamander bluEvolution 82 profiles with internal hot-dip galvanised steel reinforcements, marine-grade Maco MultiMatic hardware with nickel-plated or stainless-steel surfaces, and reinforced triple-lip seals: a combination that in Posillipo, Mergellina, Bagnoli and the towns of Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Sorrento and Castellammare di Stabia guarantees decades of performance without corrosion. The second recurring type is the supply of selective solar glazing for south- and west-facing units in Vomero, Arenella, Chiaia and Posillipo, with a solar factor g between 0.27 and 0.33, to curb summer overheating while maintaining high light transmission. The third frequent job is the supply of Maco MultiMatic hardware in RC2 class and P4A anti-burglary laminated glass for ground floors, first floors and basements in the historic centre and working-class districts, where security is a constant requirement. Finally, for the 1960s-80s blocks of Fuorigrotta, Pianura, Soccavo and Bagnoli we supply bluEvolution 82 PVC profiles to replace old aluminium windows without a thermal break, drastically reducing heat loss and internal condensation.

Local restrictions and tax incentives

The historic centre of Naples, a recognised UNESCO World Heritage site, and large parts of Chiaia, Posillipo and upper Vomero are subject to landscape and architectural restrictions enforced by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Municipality of Naples, as well as the requirements of the Naples Building Regulations. In protected buildings, requests to preserve original layouts, painted timber finishes or wood-effect PVC profiles, shutters in tones consistent with the façade, and glazing geometry are common. The entire coastal strip is also subject to coastal-landscape protection. Before any project we check the applicable requirements and, where necessary, prepare the documentation for planning and landscape applications.
