Climate characteristics and building heritage

Palermo is classified in climate zone B with just 751 degree days, one of the lowest values in Italy: mild, short winters, with minimum temperatures rarely dropping below 7-8 degrees, and very long, hot, particularly bright summers, with regular peaks between 35 and 38 degrees and over 2,500 hours of annual sunshine. Summer solar radiation is the main challenge for any window project, especially on south-, east- and west-facing elevations. The scirocco wind also calls for particular attention to air tightness. The second decisive climatic factor is coastal salt spray: sea aerosol significantly affects Mondello, Sferracavallo, Vergine Maria, Acquasanta, Arenella, Bandita and the coastal towns of the province (Bagheria, Aspra, Cefalù). The building stock is exceptionally rich. The historic centre, of Arab-Norman and later Baroque origin, retains the districts of Kalsa, Albergheria, Capo and Vucciria, with noble palazzos, internal courtyards and balustraded loggias. The 19th-century ring (Politeama, Libertà, Notarbartolo) holds Umbertine apartment blocks and very high-quality Art Nouveau residences. The twentieth-century residential belt (Pallavicino, Tommaso Natale, Brancaccio, Settecannoli) is dominated by 1960s-80s blocks, while Mondello and Sferracavallo host a widespread stock of single-family villas and historic villini from the early twentieth century.

Most common replacement types in Palermo

Four types of work recur systematically in our Palermo projects. The first is the supply of extruded aluminium shutters with Qualicoat powder coating for all elevations exposed to direct sun — a solution that in Palermo is almost essential to curb summer overheating: aluminium offers dimensional stability, salt resistance and unlimited durability. The second category is the combination of Salamander bluEvolution 82 profiles with high-performance selective solar glazing, with a solar factor g between 0.25 and 0.30 and light transmission around 65-70%: a combination that drastically reduces summer heat gain while preserving room brightness. The third recurring job concerns villas and villini in Mondello, Sferracavallo and the coastal towns of the province, where salt spray calls for reinforced profiles, marine-grade Maco hardware with stainless-steel or nickel-plated surfaces, and reinforced triple-lip seals: a choice that guarantees decades of performance without oxidation. Finally, for ground floors and first floors of outlying blocks we regularly supply Maco MultiMatic hardware in RC2 class with mushroom-head cams and P4A anti-burglary laminated glass. In the Arab-Norman and Baroque historic centre we favour wood-effect PVC or traditional timber profiles to respect the identity of the façades.

Local restrictions and tax incentives

The historic centre of Palermo, a candidate and partly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with the Arab-Norman itinerary, is subject to strict landscape and architectural restrictions enforced by the Superintendency for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Palermo and by the Palermo Building Regulations, which govern materials, layouts, finishes and permitted colour tones on public-facing elevations. In protected buildings, requirements often impose traditional timber or wood-effect PVC with shaped trims, shutters in green, brown or ivory tones consistent with the façade, and a glazing bar design compatible with the original. The coastal areas of Mondello, Sferracavallo and the province's towns are also subject to landscape protection. Before any project we check the applicable requirements and, where necessary, prepare the documentation for planning and landscape applications.
